Who is responsible for your data
Moorhood is the data controller for personal information used to run the Moorhood app and web service. You can contact us about privacy at support@moorhood.co.uk.
Information we collect
- Account information, such as your email address, sign-in provider, provider account identifier and any name supplied through Apple, Google or email registration.
- Profile information you choose to add, including your display name, boat details, experience, biography, interests, skills, who is aboard and profile photos.
- Location information when you grant permission. Moorhood stores your latest latitude and longitude privately to calculate nearby members, posts and waterway context. Other members receive only approximate area, mooring or distance information—not your stored coordinates.
- Content and interactions, including Ahoy posts, replies, waves, listings, help requests, events, photos, attendance, blocks and reports.
- Private conversations, including message text, photos, voice notes, delivery and read information and timestamps. These are available only to conversation participants and authorised service administration where reasonably required for safety, support or law.
- Device and service information, including push-notification tokens and preferences, device platform, online or recently-active status, feedback, account and activity timestamps, limited product-event names, hashed error fingerprints, and security or authentication logs supplied by our service providers. Product diagnostics do not contain precise coordinates, message bodies or private profile text.
How we use it
- To create and secure your account and provide the features you request.
- To show relevant nearby people, posts, waterway information and approximate distances.
- To deliver messages, activity updates and optional push notifications.
- To moderate the community, respond to reports, prevent abuse and protect members.
- To answer support requests, fix problems and improve the reliability and usability of Moorhood.
- To meet legal obligations and establish, exercise or defend legal claims where necessary.
Our lawful reasons
We use information where it is necessary to perform our agreement with you—for example, to run your account, profile, posts and messages. We also rely on legitimate interests to keep Moorhood safe, prevent misuse, support members and improve the service, where those interests do not override your rights.
Where required, we rely on your consent, including permissions you choose to grant for location, photos, camera, microphone and notifications. You can change device permissions at any time, although some features will then stop working. We may also process information to comply with law.
What other members can see
Signed-in members may see the profile details and content you choose to publish. If Nearby visibility is on, eligible nearby members can see your profile, approximate area or distance and activity status. Exact stored coordinates are not made available to members.
Ahoy posts are shared across the signed-in Moorhood community. Listings, help requests and events are visible to relevant members. Private messages and attachments are visible only to the conversation participants, subject to proportionate safety, support and legal access.
Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it for third-party targeted advertising.
- Supabase, which provides account authentication, database, file storage, realtime and server functions.
- Apple and Google when you choose their sign-in services, and your device platform when it supplies permissions or location lookups.
- Expo and device notification services when you enable push notifications.
- Waterway and reference-content services, such as Canal & River Trust datasets and Wikimedia services. Location or place searches sent to external services are limited to what is needed for the requested feature.
- Professional advisers, regulators, courts, law enforcement or another organisation where disclosure is required by law or reasonably necessary to protect rights and safety.
International processing
Some technology providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where UK law requires it, transfers are protected by UK adequacy regulations or approved contractual safeguards. Provider privacy notices explain their processing locations in more detail.
How long we keep it
We keep account, profile and community information while your account is active and for only as long afterwards as reasonably needed to operate the service, handle reports, prevent fraud, meet legal duties or resolve disputes.
Your latest stored location is replaced when Moorhood updates it and is removed when the associated account data is deleted. Turning off location prevents new updates but does not by itself erase the last stored location. You can permanently delete your account from Settings → Delete account.
Deleted information may remain for a limited period in protected backups before it ages out. We use the nature of the information, safety needs and legal requirements to decide retention where no fixed period applies.
Your choices and rights
Use Settings → Delete account to remove your account and associated data, or visit moorhood.co.uk/delete-account if you cannot access the app. Contact support@moorhood.co.uk to exercise another data right. We may need to verify your identity. You may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk, but we would appreciate the chance to help first.
- Edit your profile, switch Nearby visibility off, manage notifications, block members and change device permissions.
- Ask for a copy of your personal information or for inaccurate information to be corrected.
- Ask us to erase or restrict information, or to provide portable information, where the law gives you that right.
- Object to processing based on legitimate interests. We will stop unless we have a compelling lawful reason to continue.
- Withdraw consent at any time where processing relies on consent; this does not affect earlier lawful use.
Security and children
We use access controls, private storage, encrypted network connections and restricted database permissions to protect information. No online service can guarantee absolute security, so please protect your account and avoid sharing sensitive information unnecessarily.
Moorhood is intended only for adults aged 18 or over. If you believe a person under 18 has created an account, contact us so we can review and remove it where appropriate.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice as Moorhood develops or legal requirements change. The latest version will be available here and in the app, with its update date shown at the top. We will give reasonable notice of material changes where practical.
